Uckfield company to help transform Olympic Stadium

Uckfield-based bespoke pod specialist Design and Display Structures is to play a vital role in the transformation of the former Olympic Stadium.

Architects Populous and main contractor Balfour Beatty are redeveloping the iconic venue in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for client the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC).design-display-logo-un

Design and Display has been appointed to design, manufacture and install approximately 8,500 m2 of modular GRP cladding for 23 spectator facility pods and kiosks located around the stadium perimeter.

The main pods appear as cut gems with the largest measuring some 21m x 12m in plan. Each pod/kiosk performs a specific function and is fitted out accordingly with combinations of turnstiles, catering, storage, washrooms and toilets by Igloos.

D&D are coordinating their design to account for roller shutters, ventilation louvres, glazed doors and side screens, Halo canopy columns, rain water pipes and overhead security mesh, all of which penetrate into the GRP skin fixed down to a Metsec load bearing frame.

With experience of undertaking high profile, complex contracts and successfully delivering them within tight timeframes Design & Display will commence work on site early November 2014 and will work closely with the rest of the project team to ensure the stadium is completed in time for Rugby World Cup 2015.

The stadium will then become the new home of West Ham United football club in 2016 and the National Competition Centre for athletics in the UK, as well as a major live music venue.
