Uckfield business is on the move

Uckfield business Oldfield Smith & Co chartered surveyors is growing quickly and moving into new premises next week.

The company, which was launched three-and-a-half-years ago by Bernard Smith and Richard Oldfield, is moving to Unit D, Eden House, in Office Village, behind Waitrose, not far from its current premises in Mill Lane.

The move should be completed by Monday.

Mr Smith said there are now five people in their team. Working with him and Richard are office manager Sue Collett and financial controller Liz Douglas-Smith, Bernard’s wife. Chartered surveyor Paul White will be joining them in January.

Nationwide

The business started from scratch and while the bulk of its work is in Uckfield and surrounding area Oldfield Smith is doing more and more work nationwide. For example, this week it has let property in the Gatwick Diamond, restructured a lease in Winchester and settled a dilapidations claim in Sutton Coldfield.

Mr Smith said: “We are an Uckfield-based company with a national reach and we have always had an ethos that we concentrate on doing what we know we can do well.

“We want to give the best professional advice but also want to deliver that advice in a form that people can engage with.”

Important

The business has three arms, agency, management and professional and its staff have been chosen carefully so they all have the ability to engage with, and talk comfortably, with everybody they might meet. “We don’t regard any members of staff as junior,” said Mr Smith. “Everybody is an important representative of the company.”

Oldfield Smith has always embraced technology too with representation on all major channels of communication, through their own website and through Facebook, Twitter and Google+. They have remote access to their computers and use internet telephony.

Also moving to Office Village is Oldfield Smith’s sister company OSAC Developments, which specialises in the refurbishment, reconfiguration and redevelopment of commercial and residential property.

Mr Smith, who is president of Uckfield Chamber of Commerce, said Oldfield Smith was pleased to be investing in buying its own premises in Uckfield and in recruiting staff. The company was happy to be working in the town and believed it had a bright future here.
