Uckfield Anderida outplayed by excellent Iden

Uckfield Anderida travelled down to Iden, near Rye, on what felt like an autumnal day and were keen to bat first on a flat wicket, after captain Tungate won the toss, writes Tom Grimes.

Their opening batsmen, Burns and Greenslade, made a good start, with early boundaries off some poor bowling.

However, Burns’ first efforts were quickly undone when he clipped a ball off his pads straight to square leg, and Greenslade received a good swinging delivery that beat him all ends up.

Good early shots

Turner, coming in at number three, performed similarly, hitting some good early shots and looking in good touch before falling for 16.

This brought Tungate and McCallum together, who formed a solid partnership, but one which got bogged down by some excellent bowling from Edward Avann.

In a display of chilling economy, his nine overs yielded just eight runs, four of which were from a beautifully timed flick through midwicket from Tungate.

Excellent bowling display

It was unfortunate, then, after seeing off this excellent bowling display, that Tungate (35) and McCallum (32) both fell trying to accelerate the run rate.

The former was most frustrated after tapping a low full toss straight back to a shocked bowler who, until that point, had bowled either wides or no-balls.

Huntley and, notably, Reed (23), did their best to squeeze runs out of the final overs, but in truth finishing on 171 for 6 felt like too little on such a true surface.

Praise

An outstanding tea raised the spirits of the visitors, though, with homemade scotch eggs, sausage rolls and scones all earning praise.

And those spirits were maintained after Brady dismissed Rens early. This brought together the Avann brothers, Edward and George, who showed their class in picking length very quickly and dispatching the Uckfield bowlers to all corners of this lovely ground.

And while George fell for 45, his brother carried on to an assured 94 before falling trying to reach his century with a six before he ran out of runs.

The remaining runs were merely a formality, and home team eased their way to victory off just 30 overs.

Shocking defeat for Anderida’s 2nd XI

• Meanwhile, Uckfield Anderida’s 2nd XI suffered a shocking defeat to Battle at the Victoria Ground, after bowling the visitors out for just 94, Uckfield collapsed to 67 all out.
