Our independent columnist, Observer, feels more should be done to control what is virtually the absolute power of King Car.
The news that more car parking spaces are coming to Uckfield Community Hospital is welcome.
It is a good initiative from the League of Friends and it was also pleasing to read the NHS will reconfigure the exiting car park to give more spaces.
There is no doubt parking has been a big problem at the hospital for many years.
It is the same at most hospitals, large or small, around the country, in my experience.
In an ideal world small buses would be running round Uckfield’s housing estates and linking with the hospital, railway station and town centre.
Our reliance on the car is now virtually total.
The town would be a better place if the car was not king.
20mph speed limit
East Sussex County Council has thrown a wet blanket over a request from the town council for a 20mph speed limit on the town’s housing estates.
It is just the sort of decision I expect from the council, which has a reputation – deserved in my view, and others in Uckfield – of putting the car first, second and third.
Like the deputy town mayor, Cllr Duncan Bennett, I see blanket 20mph speed limits all over the country. They have been there for years.
There is also one in Lewes where East Sussex County Council is based.
If it is good enough for Lewes, it is certainly good enough for Uckfield.
