Total raised in memory of chefs killed in Uckfield crash rises to £10,000

More than £10,000 has now been raised for the families of two men killed in an Uckfield crash.

An event held at the Pig and Butcher, at Five Ash Down, on Saturday night raised more than £3,500 and £6,690 has been donated via a JustGiving page.

Chefs Cristian and Adrian were highly-regarded at the Pig and Butcher at Five Ash Down and landlord David Gardner wanted to raise enough money to help repatriate Adrian to Romania and meet the funeral costs of both men.

He said the turnout at a barbecue and music night on Saturday far exceeded what they had hoped for and businesses were generous with donations of prizes for a raffle.

David said: “We raised a little in excess of £3,500 which was superb and that does not include the crowdfunding which sits at £6,690, less fees. This will enable the support of both families.”

The cost of repatriating Adrian to Romania, where his wife lives, is 7,000 euros. Cristian’s wife Barbara, who lives with their children in Lewes, has decided to bury him close to her and the cost of his funeral will be more than £5,000.

David says on the JustGiving page, where the fund-raising target is £12,000: “We would like to be able to help them with these costs, as you can imagine no-one could have predicted this terrible event and neither family has the necessary funds to pay the costs.”

He adds: “These men were so much more than chefs, they were more than friends, indeed they had become an extended family, not just to us but many of you as well.

“We are so moved with the contributions made her on this site. We continue to raise funds in the pub itself, so please let’s all show their families how much they meant to everybody here and donate whatever you can afford, anything given is a help.”

Cristian and Adrian died in a crash at Coopers Green at about 11pm on Saturday, August 19. They were returning to the Pig and Butcher after joining a local they knew at the Ringles Cross who was celebrating his recent retirement.

Both chefs were well-known in the area. They had previously worked together at The Lamb, Piltdown; The Bull, Newick, and at an hotel in Lewes before joining David and Karen Gardner at The Ringles Cross and then moving with them to The Pig and Butcher.

• Originally the JustGiving target was £14,000 because it was thought both men would be repatriated to Romania. It has been reduced now that Cristian is to be buried locally.
