Sixteen-year-old Faye Kirby is to have her head shaved to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity.
The Uckfield teenager, who lives on Manor Park with parents Jackie Webber and Mick Kirby, said her mission began with a joke update on her Facebook page but now she’s taking it very seriously.
Faye said: “I said if I got 100 ‘likes’ on my page I would shave all my hair off. Within three days I had 111 likes so the challenge was on. Lots of people heard about it and have supported me organising it.”
Faye started this term at Sussex Downs College in Lewes but previously went to Uckfield Community Technology College.
She doesn’t think the school will mind her having a shaven head because she doesn’t have to wear uniform. Her parents are just hoping she raises lots of money to make the sacrifice worthwhile.
Faye chose to support Help for Heroes because she has friends and family in Afghanistan.
She said: “What I am doing is nothing compared with what the soldiers are doing for us in places like Afghanistan. I think we should make sure they have everything they need to help them.”
She is on a creative, media and business course at the Sussex Downs College and hopes to start soon on a sports leadership course.
She is a keen rugby player and used to play in a mixed team in Uckfield until she was about eight when she joined the girls’ team Brighton and Lewes 5th Sussex Barbarians.
Faye also plays stoolball for Isfield Seniors and Newick Juniors.
Faye will be having her head shaved at Ego hairdressers in Uckfield High Street on Monday, October 24, at 11am.
