Sun City clocks up its 1,000th customer

Sun City has clocked up its 1,000th customer since the tanning salon opened in Uckfield eight months ago.

The business at 168 High Street is owned by David and Rachel who are pleased people are using the sun beds for a variety of reasons, in addition to getting a tan.

The couple decided to launch the business after their daughter, who lives in Europe, was recommended by a doctor to use a sun bed to help with the skin condition psoriasis. It had made a difference.

“Use of a sun bed is often prescribed on the continent to help with skin conditions,” said Rachel.

Her customers agreed it helped with psoriasis, acne and eczema. In addition some use the beds because they want to top up on Vitamin D during short winter days, and also to counter the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), while others thought it helped with arthritic pain.

Rachel says the technology of sun beds has changed and improved significantly since the 80s, “when it was like standing in front of a toaster”, and if used in moderation the effects could beneficial.

Sun City beds are top of the range and comply with the latest EU standards. Customers like the layout of the salon and are impressed with the cleanliness.

Rachel adds: “We are very strict about how often people should use the beds and for how long.

“Everybody’s skin type is checked and record cards are completed after a discussion about whether they have used sun beds before and how their skin behaves in the sun.

“We have lotions too to keep skin moisturised and help people achieve the effect they are aiming for.”

Sun City customers are aged from 18, and into their 70s. They choose between lay down and stand up beds and a Rubino red bed, which Rachel says is particularly good for helping skin conditions.

Look out for special offers there. For example Sun City is offering free sessions  for mums on Mothering Sunday, March 31.

Rachel says they are always be pleased to show people round the salon and answer any questions people might have about the different types of sun bed they could use depending on the result they wanted to achieve.
