Forest Vet lays on a treat for clients
There was a treat in store for clients of The Forest Vet, Maresfield, when they joined staff for a night out.
They met at The Chequers, Maresfield, and enjoyed wine, and a meal of lasagne, garlic bread, and salad, before gathering for talks.
Practice owner Dr Rachael Vinod Nair spoke about changes within the veterinary industry, a shortage of vets, and the potential effects of Brexit.
Travel with pets
She said pet owners planning to travel within Europe with their animals, after March 30, would need to prepare well in advance in the event of a ‘no deal’ Brexit.
At the moment, animals can travel in Europe 21 days after being vaccinated against rabies.
But the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs has advised that animals would need to be vaccinated and also have a blood titre test, for the rabies antibody, carried out a minimum 30 days after the vaccination.
After that a period of three months must pass before pets can travel to the EU.
Rachael said owners who wanted to travel to the EU, whatever the outcome of Brexit negotiations, should visit a vet at least four months before the date they wish to travel.
Shortage of vets
Rachael also spoke about a shortage of vets in the UK which was expected to worsen after Brexit.
She told Uckfield News: “Fifty per cent of vets currently in the UK are from overseas, and 95% of those that work in UK abattoirs are from Europe.”
It was expected that certification for the export of meat would go up by 325% in the event of ‘no deal’ and even more vets would be needed.
Shortage Occupation List
It was hoped that vets would appear on the Shortage Occupation List but nothing had been heard about that yet.
Rachael told Uckfield News: “If we don’t have enough vets, that will impact massively on the welfare of animals in this country.”
• One in eight cats over the age of eight suffer from hypertension, and free blood pressure tests for cats over that age are being offered at The Forest Vet so you can check the health of your pet.
Big news about Premier Inn and Costa
Big news at the end of last year was a decision by Wealden Council approving plans for a Premier Inn and Drive-Thru Costa to be built at the Ashdown Business Park in Maresfield.
Building work is expected to begin early this year and there’s a possibility the 80-bedroom hotel, with restaurant and bar, and neighbouring Costa could be open by the end of the year, according to Lawson Commercial partner Chris Lawson, whose firm is marketing sites on the business park.

Cube makes good use of its self storage space
This is the time of year when families are making space for Christmas gifts and it becomes clear some toys have to go to make way for new ones.
If you have found some that are in good condition and that your child no longer needs then you might be interested in Uckfield’s Big Charity Toy Drop.
This campaign is designed to hunt out toys for donation to Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice so they can be played with by children currently in their care.
The campaign has been launched by Cube who will be storing donations in one of their units at their self storage centre on the Bellbrook Industrial Estate before being presented to the charity after the end of the month.
Lots of people can benefit from the campaign, children being helped by Chestnut Tree Hospice, families needing more space in their homes and Cube who are pleased to be making good use of their storage facilities.
Cube has a variety of storage options and when you are running out of storage options yourself you can read more about them on their website here.
