Roadworks crews threatened and abused in Uckfield

Threats have been made to workmen carrying out Uckfield town centre improvement works.

One driver wound down the window of his vehicle and made threats to a man about his wife and children.

Uckfield county councillor, Claire Dowling, said there had been an “appalling level of abuse” hurled at the workmen.

She called on drivers who were stopped at the lights “not to take it out” on the men.

“We cannot allow the men to be abused as they are being by Uckfield residents,” Cllr Dowling said.

Uckfield Town Mayor, Cllr Ian Smith, said he had been “knocked back” when he heard of the level of abuse. The men, he said, were “just earning a honest penny”.
