Plans have been submitted to use former offices in Uckfield as a low-cost gym which would be open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The Anytime Fitness gym would be on ground and first floor levels at Suite 4, Bell Walk House. The Kit Wilson charity shop will carry on as usual. Its premises are not affected by the plans.
A planning application to change the use of the offices is before Wealden Council and a statement with it says Anytime Fitness are a ‘low-cost’ gym, providing rolling monthly contracts which allow members to cancel their membership at any time.
The statement says: “The proposed gymnasium will principally provide strength training and cardio equipment for members’ use alongside changing and shower facilities, personal lockers and WCs (incorporating disabled access facilities).
“Audible music will be strictly controlled by staff members, to protect the amenity of nearby occupiers.
“The proposed gym will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, ensuring it provides members with convenient faciities, featuring top-quality exercise equipment and security and surveillance systems throughout the day and night.”
The statement says Anytime Fitness is an example where the model has expanded nationally and internationally with more than 3,000 locations worldwide and over 2.5 million members.
“The concept is based around a no-strings attached principle where gymnasiums contain a large selection of market leading equipment without the items which are expensive to operate and maintain, such as swimming pools, saunas or studios.”
*Uckfield Town Council plans committee last night voted to support the application when it goes before Wealden District Council for determination.
