Update on Wednesday, January 4, 2017: Planning permission has been given for the former Joli Couture shop in Uckfield High Street to be turned into a ‘drinking establishment’.
A Wealden District Council report recommending approval of the planning application said the change of use would be compatible with existing uses which characterise the shopping area would bring a vacant unit back into use, adding vitality to the area.
The report said: “The site sits within the main shopping area of the High Street where the majority of the premises are shops, offices with some residential.
“We have had no objections raised from premises within the area of the site, but one objection from a resident who lives in Grange Road, who can partially view the site.”
That resident said there was already a bar nearby, the large pavement area would attract customers to spread and cause noise and disturbance and there was a lack of policing to stop noise and nuisance.
From our original story on November 11, 2016: Plans have been submitted to change the use of the former Joli Couture shop in Uckfield High Street from retail to ‘drinking establishment’.
The application has been submitted to Wealden District Council by Mr Alexander Summers, of Brighton, who says two people would be employed there full-time and four part-time.
The opening hours are said to be ‘not known’ on the form before Wealden.
Drawings show both ground and first floors of the premises, at 75 High Street, as being a drinking establishment. A bar is shown on the ground floor and two toilets retained upstairs.
No further details are given in the planning application.
