Phone mast would ‘desecrate’ parish land, say Framfield villagers

Villagers fighting plans for a phone mast on Framfield Recreation Ground are holding a meeting tonight.

They are upset that their own parish council is supporting the proposal for a 15 metre mast having been offered £40,000 for a 25-year lease for a site for it.

They say the recreation ground was given to the village in memory of 32 soldiers who died during World War 1 and the base station would be alongside trees specially planted in their memory.framfield-recreation-ground-plaque

Seventy people attended a public meeting in August where concerns about the mast proposal were voiced but a week later Framfield Parish Council decided to support the plan.

Campaigners say many would have been on holiday then and they want to share more information, discuss concerns, and give others the opportunity to sign a growing petition against “desecration of parish land”.

Jo Wade, one of the campaigners, told Uckfield News there was also concern that the mast would be 120 metres from the school and 150 metres from residential properties.

Another villager Dawn Gregory said: “I personally feel quite devastated. I can’t get over the fact that they are going to put this mast on what is, not only a memorial ground where trees are planted in memory of men who died in the war, but also the fact that it would be 20 metres away from a children’s play area. I can’t believe they would do such a thing.”

The meeting will be held at Framfield Memorial Hall tonight at 7.30pm.
