Town centre plans to go on show

Plans for the regeneration of Uckfield town centre are due to go on show next Friday, October 9.

A public exhibition will be held in the Weald Hall at the Uckfield Civic Centre from 2.30pm to 7.30pm with two presentations at 2.30pm and 6pm.

Representatives of East Sussex County Council, Wealden District Council, Uckfield Town Council and East Sussex Fire and Rescue sat on the Uckfield Steering Group which commissioned the plans.

Uckfield Town Council started work on the Town Centre Master Plan in 2007 and invited the other organisations to be involved.

Each of them owns parcels of land in the town centre.

A press release issued on behalf of the Uckfield Steering Group says the proposed plan identifies four component areas.

They include: the North Quarter, including the surface car parks, the BT Building and High Street Properties; the Western Edge, including the triangle site and the school; the Bell Farm Road Frontage, including the fire station and Tesco and The Waterside.

Work would be expected to begin on the North Quarter first and take between three and five years.

The earliest start date would be 2012. Steering group chairman Cllr Mick Harker of Uckfield Town Council said: ‘We are really excited about the proposals. Given the current economic climate, these proposals to make the most of the town’s many facilities could not have come at a better time.’
