Double-decker bus family applies to live permanently in Blackboys

A family living in a double-decker bus on land at Blackboys have applied for planning permission to remain permanently on the site.

Mr R. Flynn and Ms I. Bolumburu have previously been given temporary permission to use the land for agriculture, forestry and the stationing of a bus and lean-to structure for residential purposes at Quicken Wood, Lewes Road.

Documents before Wealden District Council argue it is now time to grant permanent permission.

The couple’s agent, Anthony Keen, says: “The evidence provided with this application shows that my clients have achieved a holistic, sustainable and subsistence-based rural enterprise and that the grant of permanent permission for the dwelling is fully justified.”

They have reduced reliance on timber grown off the site by reducing the quantity of lump charcoal produced and increasing the amount of artists’ charcoal produced using willow and spindle from the site.

They have also increased the amount of forestry products and, in particular, increased considerably sales of vegetables, herbs and plants. The overall profit in 2009 was £9,077, £10,806 in 2010, £10,688 in 2011 and projected to be £11,811 in 2012 and 2013.

If all income from the non-site-based activities were discounted the profits for the years 2009, 2010 and 2011 would be £6,804, £8,886 and £9,188 respectively.

“It may therefore justifiably be argued that self-sufficiency has been achieved and is likely to be maintained for the foreseeable future,” Mr Keen.
