Sun shines on Lions' fete
The sun shone on Uckfield this afternoon for the Lions Club fete while only a few miles down the road in Tunbridge Wells there was a thunderstorm.
Lynne Ireland who takes over soon as the club's first female president said afterwards: "We were very lucky with the weather and we had a very good afternoon."
Crowds turned out to support the fund-raisers and entertainment was provided by the Instep Majorettes and the Uckfield Community Technology College carnival group Spiritus.
Spiritus ran workshops, gave a drumming demonstration and showed off their puppet Brook. A video of Brook being operated by four UCTC students Robyn Shrubbs, Cydnie Aldrich, Demelza Drury and Jack Meacher can be seen on the Uckfield News Facebook page.
Two Spiritus members are pictured, above, helping at the workshop. They are Lily Smith, left, and Polly Smith, who are not related.
Weekend of events
Among stall-holders were bonfire societies from Uckfield, Maresfield and Crowborough, the Uckfield hospital's League of Friends, Uckfield Stamp Club.
The fete rounded off a weekend of events organised by the Lions. It started with a skittles evening on Friday night in Barcombe, then yesterday (Saturday) more than 140 diabetes tests were conducted in town with eight people being referred for further tests to their doctors.
Thirteen teams took part in a quiz night at the Luxford Centre last night and raised more than £300.
The Lions are best known for organising visits by Santa and his sleigh around Uckfield in the run up to Christmas but they also donate funds to community organisations such as the UCTC Spiritus group.
They have also donated funds to support 16-year-old Vicki Hyett of Manor Park, Uckfield, who has been selected to act as a photographer at the Guide movement's centenary camp in Yorkshire later this year.
Vicki needs £600 to cover her costs and had her own stall at the Lions fete to help boost her funds.
She is pictured with her mum Sue, who is a Brownie leader.
Below are helpers at the Instep Majorettes stall. They are from the left Alice Ruben, Emily Martin and Natalie Morphew.
