Harry Potter takes over Uckfield Picture House this weekend
All three screens at the Uckfield Picture House will be showing Harry Potter today and six out of the 11 shows had sold out by yesterday afternoon.
Cinema owner Kevin Markwick told Uckfield News that more than 800 tickets had been sold for today. About 630 tickets were already sold for Saturday and 450 for Sunday.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is the final film in the Harry Potter series, based on the books by J.K. Rowling, and Mr Markwick said because three screens would be showing the film he expected the biggest single take by one film in one day at the Picture House.
He was sorry this was the last of the films because no matter how bad things got he always knew there would be a new Harry Potter film in about six months time to boost income.
The biggest selling Harry Potter for the Picture House so far was the first, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and Mr Markwick is hopeful the latest will do as well as that – takings on the other films were about two thirds down on the first.
The best selling film ever at the Picture House was the King’s Speech, followed by Mama Mia and then Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
The Harry Potter films continue to attract a wide age range, said Mr Markwick. Anyone who saw it aged 12 would now be 22 and still interested, he added.
Mr Markwick said it wouldn’t be his choice to show the film on all three screens at his cinema but he had to do it to compete with the multiplexes at Tunbridge Wells and Brighton.
“Twenty years ago people came along and if you said sorry you were full up they would buy tickets for tomorrow or the next day. Now they just say they will go down to Brighton where it is on every 25 minutes.
“I would prefer to see different films on different screens,” he added.
Both 2D and 3D versions of the latest Harry Potter will be showing at the cinema and, at the moment, tickets for 2D are out-selling 3D at a ratio of 2:1.
Looking ahead Mr Markwick reckons the next film to reach his screens and make a big impact will be a new Sam Mendes Bond film, starring Daniel Craig, coming in November 2012.
