Uckfield could host prestigious Chambers of Commerce meeting

Uckfield could host a prestigious gathering of Chambers of Commerce members from across Sussex.

The town’s own Chamber is the third largest in the county, after Eastbourne and Brighton, and members say it would be appropriate and of benefit to local businesses to organise such an event.

Representatives attended a “Meeting of Commerce” at Eastbourne in May and were impressed by the networking and sponsorship potential. About 150 people were there.

Adrian Corbin who went, along with Chamber president Peter Gale and secretary Ian Blackaller, told fellow members about it on Tuesday night (July 20) and said he hoped there would be support for a similar meeting in Uckfield.

Other points raised during the evening included concern about the high level of business rates on the industrial estate.

President Mr Gale said this was one reason cited for a member moving their business from the area.

He added: “For most businesses this tax is a cause for concern and I can only stress that if this situation applies to you, you need to take the appropriate professional advice.

“Comparisons with other similar premises are always useful and can be found on the valuation offices website which is www.voa.gov.uk.”

Mr Gale also told members about a town appeal to raise funds for the Gamble family who recently lost their home in a fire. Only two years ago Private Daniel Gamble died while serving in Afghanistan. A collection made during the evening raised £146.84.

The Uckfield Chamber of Commerce, which has 220 members, holds well-supported bi-monthly meetings at different venues in and around the town. Tuesday’s meeting at the Pig and Butcher, Five Ash Down, was followed by a barbecue.
