New restaurant to open in Uckfield

A new restaurant is due to open in Uckfield next month. It will be Indian but with a difference, according to the owners.

Lauren Ahmed said that during the day the restaurant in the former Ben’s Place premises in Grange Road would have a street food menu offering traditional foods from India and Bangladesh.

And there would be an Indian/Bangladesh take on afternoon tea with Indian savoury dishes, such as chicken tikka, offered instead of egg mayonnaise sandwiches.

Lauren, who is opening the restaurant with her husband Towfique said they would still do scones because she loves them. “They are my favourite part of afternoon tea. There will be petit fours too with more traditional flavours such as cardamom.”

Decorators are working in the premises at the moment and furniture is on order and it is hoped the restaurant will open on Tuesday, December 5.

Lauren says Towfique is currently operations manager in a hotel and has worked in a variety of hotels and Indian restaurants over the last ten to 14 years.

Most recently Lauren has worked in retail sales but she has also worked in hotels – the couple met working in a hotel – and they both helped an uncle of Towfique’s when he opened an Indian takeaway a couple of years ago.

The Ahmeds live in Haywards Heath and only visited Uckfield for the first time when Lauren’s mother, Pauline Poggo moved here two years ago.

Lauren added: “Neither of us had been to the town before then and now we think it is a great. We love it and will probably move there once we get the restaurant going.”

Towfique is originally from Bangladesh, he came to England in 2005, while Lauren grew up in Reigate.

Lauren is currently off work on maternity leave. She had her first baby, Amira, in January.

The couple have been talking about opening their own restaurant for a long time and had looked at the former Pepper Dining in Uckfield when it was available.

That didn’t work out but Steve Campbell from Lawson Commercial said another property was coming on to the market so they held on until they were sent details of Loxford Chambers at 144a Grange Road.

Lauren said: “We loved it, thought it was great, so different, not like any other premises. We are very excited about opening and the timing is perfect for us.”
