Wealden MP, Charles Hendry, is supporting the EU Referendum Bill, which will be introduced in the House of Commons on July 5.
The EU Referendum Bill has been presented as a Private Member’s Bill by Conservative MP, James Wharton. If passed, the Bill will require there to be a referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union before December 31, 2017.
Mr Hendry said: “It has been 40 years since we last had a referendum on Britain’s role within the EU and it is clear to me that a huge number of people want a proper debate and vote about the future.
“The timescale has been deliberately set to give the Prime Minister the chance to renegotiate our relationship with the EU, to secure the best deal for Britain in that process, as most of us recognise it is not working as it should, at the moment. “I hope a new deal can be reached which will focus more on trade and stop the process of political integration, which the people of this country can support in the referendum.”
