More than 200 runners took part in the Kings Head Canter a 5k race between Chiddingly and the Kings Head pub in East Hoathly.

Finn McNally from Brighton Phoenix running club won in a new course record of 15:06, taking 14 seconds off the previous course record which was set at the inaugural event back in 1998.

Rebecca Moore (Chichester Runners & AC) won the women’s category for the second year in a row, in a very quick time of 17:20, only ten seconds slower than the course record.

Runners in the Kings Head Canter are, top, first woman home Rebecca Moore; race winner Finn McNally; bottom, from left Rosie Gasson, placed 72nd; Paul Gasson, 57th, and Richard Clayton, 5th.

The unique feature of the event is that it attracts runners of all ages and abilities, from young children aged ten, right through to Rosemary Akehurst, aged over 80, who finished her 19thconsecutive Kings Head Canter in a time of 62 minutes.

Race director Stuart Mills said: “With it being a hot and sunny day, many runners found it made completing the five kilometres a bit more challenging.  However, it did make their complimentary drink of 1648 beer or soft drink upon finishing that little bit more satisfying.”
