Mid-table finish for Uckfield Anderida

Uckfield Anderida finished the season mid table with a final stumble at Pett at the weekend.

The team travelled to the wonderfully-situated ground at Pett confident of finishing the season with a flourish.

But despite taking two early wickets, Uckfield dropped straight forward catches yet again to make life hard for themselves.

Clean hitting boundaries

This enabled Crisford (79) and Murphy (27) to combine solid defence with clean hitting boundaries to put on important runs on a slow pitch where the ball kept low.

Iswariah and Burns made the crucial breakthroughs, combined with some fine bowling from Phillips and Harvey to mop up most of the lower order, but it needed Grimes to finish things off, bowling the Home side out for 188 with five overs to spare.

Uckfield remained confident as they enjoyed their tea with the sea twinkling in the background, the coffee cake proving very popular.

Tricky

Uckfield found, though, that the pitch remained tricky to bat on and started very slowly, with Grimes and captain Tungate unable to make headway against the tight opening bowling.

But once the openers had bowled themselves out, and Grimes had departed for a stodgy ten, Holman and Tungate made progress with the run rate and looked to be cruising to victory when Holman suffered the misfortune of a ricochet from his thigh pad onto the stumps.

With Burns lasting just a few balls, Reed came in and made a mockery of any claims that the pitch was tricky to bat on with some gorgeous drives for four.

Victim

However, he too was the victim to an unlucky ricochet and with his departure, Uckfield’s chances of victory departed too, as the tail was swiftly bowled out 26 runs short.

Meanwhile the 2nd XI suffered a severe defeat to Buxted after being bowled out for 88 and losing the game by 9 wickets.

This left both teams 4th from bottom in divisions 7 and 12, hoping for a better showing next year.
