Marco's inn at Maresfield looks set to lose bid for flagpole

Marco Pierre White’s Chequers Inn at Maresfield looks set to lose its bid to put a flagpole in front of the building to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Wealden District Council planning committee members are recommended to refuse the application when they meet next week.

A report from officers recommends refusal saying: “The proposed flagpole and flag, by virtue of their inappropriate siting, would be detrimental to the, character, appearance and setting of this Grade II* Listed Building, having regard to the general planning policy requirement to preserve or enhance listed buildings.

“The flagpole and flag would result in additional visual cluttering of the prominent and attractive front facade of the listed building, and would partially obscure the fine historic hanging sign with wrought iron bracket. In the circumstances there is considered to be inadequate justification for the flagpole to be fixed to the listed building as proposed.”
