Marco Pierre White’s Chequers Inn at Maresfield looks set to lose its bid to put a flagpole in front of the building to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Wealden District Council planning committee members are recommended to refuse the application when they meet next week.
A report from officers recommends refusal saying: “The proposed flagpole and flag, by virtue of their inappropriate siting, would be detrimental to the, character, appearance and setting of this Grade II* Listed Building, having regard to the general planning policy requirement to preserve or enhance listed buildings.
“The flagpole and flag would result in additional visual cluttering of the prominent and attractive front facade of the listed building, and would partially obscure the fine historic hanging sign with wrought iron bracket. In the circumstances there is considered to be inadequate justification for the flagpole to be fixed to the listed building as proposed.”
Wealden planners have approved:
*Converting the former Little Chef and Burger King into a KFC Drive-thru restaurant at the services site next to the Blackdown roundabout on the Uckfield by-pass.
*An extension to Duddleswell tea room and kitchen – earlier story here.
*The installation of an access road to the new GP surgery between Rocks Park and West Park, off the B2102, before first occupation rather than prior to the start of the development.
