Man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after Uckfield fatal crash

Update on Monday, November 30: A 26-year-old man has been arrested after the Uckfield fatal crash.

He was held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and other offences, following the death of a man in Coopers Green Road, Uckfield, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police said the 26-year-old has been released on bail until February 28, while inquiries continue.

Update at 12.50pm on Saturday, November 28: Police said they have traced a vehicle believed to be involved in a fatal crash that claimed the life of a 35-year-old pedestrian in Uckfield in the early hours of this morning.

They say a 26-year-old man is assisting them with their inquiries. They are appealing for anyone who may have any information regarding any vehicle or pedestrian near to the location in Coopers Green Road, to come forward.

Police say the collision happened around 00.50 hours and a pedestrian, a 35-year-old local man, died of injuries sustained in the collision.

They said the vehicle believed to be involved in the collision was later traced by them to a nearby address.

Our original story: It is understood a man died in the early hours of this morning after a collision on the road between the Ringles Cross pub, Uckfield, and Coopers Green.

The road was closed from 12.48am and only re-opened at around 9am.

It is understood the man had been at the Ringles Cross pub and was walking between the pub and Coopers Green when the incident took place.

Pub landlord David Gardner said he did not know what happened but confirmed the incident involved one of their customers. He said the news was very upsetting for all at the Ringles Cross as it would be for anybody who knew the man.

Sussex Police are investigating and said they were on scene from 12.48am. They described it as a “very serious RTC” on one of their social media streams.

Their investigation has been named #OpWestLake.
