Parking spaces replace flattened Luxford Field toilets

Parent and child car parking spaces have replaced the former Luxford car park toilets in Uckfield.

The disused lavatory block was demolished by Wealden District Council.

Our story from March 20:

The disused public toilets at the Luxford Field car park have been demolished.

They were knocked down last week in readiness for the space to be used as five extra car parking spaces.

They had been closed for some years after Wealden District Council decided to no longer to provide public toilets and instead instigated a community toilet scheme.

Before going ahead with the demolition, the district council offered the loos to Uckfield Town Council, which declined to take them on.

Toilets built in 1961

When Wealden applied for planning permission last autumn to knock-down the building it said the public conveniences at Luxford Field car park were built around 1961.

A report said: “Wealden District Council has reluctantly come to this decision after exhausting possibilities to return these public conveniences to Uckfield Town Council, which voted against taking ownership.

“The district council also offered the public conveniences to the wider community, but no voluntary organisation showed any interest in taking them on.”

It was in October 2015 that Uckfield Town Council decided against taking on the toilets. See the UckfieldNews.com report at the time which explains why councillors made the decision.
