Home Instead CAREGivers who are launching a 'Stay Nourished' campaign to change the way older people eat.

Home care company launches ‘Stay Nourished’ campaign

A home care company that looks after people in Uckfield and Lewes has launched a campaign around eating as we get older.

Statistics showing that 50 per cent of over 75s eat less food than they used to, and an independent survey by Home Instead Senior Care also reveals that almost one-in-five over-75s haven’t eaten a meal with anyone for three months or longer.

They say they have less desire to eat or don’t feel hungry when they are eating alone.

Struggling

Additionally, one fifth of over-75s (20%) are struggling to cook their own food and over a third (34%) admit regularly skipping meals (at least once a week), with nearly one-in ten doing so on a daily basis.

In light of this research, Home Instead’s ‘Stay Nourished’ campaign will help educate the community about the importance of nutrition, how to spot malnutrition and dispel misconceptions around diet and appetite for our older generations.

The aim is to give families the confidence to talk openly to their elderly relatives about food and nutrition.

Guides

Alison Scutt, owner of Home Instead in Lewes and Uckfield has provided its CAREGivers with tools, nutrition guides, and useful advice, to help support their older clients to eat healthily, stay nourished, and avoid illness through poor nutrition.

Alison now wants to share this with the local community, saying, “As part of the Stay Nourished campaign, we will be looking at all aspects of healthy eating, malnutrition, food hygiene, food preparation and cooking methods. We are committed to helping older people to eat well, drink well and age well.

“We want to start a nutrition revolution in our community and change the way older people eat and are keen to deliver community workshops to local businesses, groups and organisations in the local community. We are encouraging people to get in touch to book a free session.”

Achievement

Alongside the launch of the nutrition campaign, the local Home Instead office has been named a 5-Star Best Employer in Care, which is an outstanding achievement for the care company.
