Gas works start in Uckfield

Gas works began in New Town, Uckfield, today and by the afternoon townspeople were caught up in traffic jams.

Maria Mann, whose salon The Beauty Spot was badly affected during the first phase of High Street improvements said three of her clients had been late for appointments but they were blaming hold-ups on the by-pass rather than in the town centre.

Between 5.30pm and 6pm the traffic was moving relatively smoothly from north to south. Lights near the road works seemed to stay red for a long period of time but when they changed the traffic cleared.

One bus stopped by the lights at the junction of High Street with Church Street reached Grange Road before joining a slow-moving queue.

Traffic turning into the High Street from Bell Lane didn’t go as far back as the Tesco roundabout. On previous occasions the queues have gone a long way beyond that.
