Former printing works in Framfield Road could be demolished

Former printing works in Framfield Road, Uckfield, could be demolished and three terraced houses built on the site.

The works are next door to a fish and chip shop with a semi-detached property the other side, closest to the town centre. Land has been bought from the owner of the semi-detached property to add it to the application site and “assist with the viability of the project”.

A statement included with a planning application before Wealden District Council says that while there are a few scattered commercial properties in the vicinity the surrounding area is mostly residential.

In consultations before submission of the planning application four self-contained flats were considered for the site but there were design issues and the current proposal was drawn up.

The planning statement concludes:

“The proposal is considered to be a more worthy scheme in terms of appearance architecturally in the street scene and will allow the footprint to be decreased from that of the existing printing works thus being more in keeping with the adjoining residential properties.

“Arguably, of more importance, in the light of the recent planning policy changes eminating from the habitat regulations the proposal will make a significant contribution towards the reduction of carbon emissions both in terms of energy efficiency and vehicular journeys to the site.”
