Election day – Uckfield residents to choose town and district councillors

• The count for Uckfield Town Council and Wealden District Council takes place on Friday morning, May 3. Uckfield News will carry the results as they come through.

Elections take place today in Uckfield with residents able to vote for who they would like to sit on town and district councils.

Wealden District Council responsibilities include planning and building control, waste collection and recycling, environmental health, housing and housing benefit, council tax, council tax benefit and business rates.

Uckfield Town Council is responsible for play areas and recreation grounds, allotments, cemeteries, and it owns and maintains buildings such as sports pavilions at Victoria Pleasure Ground and West Park, Foresters Hall, The Civic Centre, and the railway station signal box.

Wealden District Council candidates

Residents will be voting in four wards for district councillors. Those standing include:

UCKFIELD EAST (1 seat)

Bruce Broughton-Tompkins, Conservative
Paul Sparks, Liberal Democrats
Gareth Stell, UKIP

UCKFIELD NEW TOWN (2 seats)

Ben Cox, Labour and Co-operative

Carole Ridout, Liberal Democrats

UCKFIELD NORTH (1 seat)

UCKFIELD RIDGEWOOD AND LITTLE HORSTED (1 seat)

Uckfield Town Council candidates

There are elections in only three of five wards for Uckfield town councillors: in Uckfield East where there are three seats and five candidates; Uckfield New Town where there are four seats and five candidates, and Uckfield West where there are two seats and three candidates.

Candidates nominated in the following wards will automatically become town councillors because there are more seats than the number of people standing.

• Keith Everett was validly nominated for the Uckfield Ridgewood seat but died after the time had passed for withdrawals but before the nominations were published. As a result, his name still appears on the list.

Uckfield Town Council is advertising for two people who might be interested in being co-opted as councillors.
