Concept of developing Uckfield around a village green "is exciting", says developer.

Developer speaks enthusiastically about regeneration of Uckfield

The managing director of a major property development company has spoken enthusiastically about the potential for developing Uckfield and says discussions with major retailers over the years have been encouraging.

Christopher Borkowski, managing director of SJI, which has previously worked with Tesco on plans for the heart of Uckfield, says in an email to Uckfield News that his company remains convinced of the town’s potential.

Mr Borkowski says: “We have made a range of proposals over the years and engaged with the Town Centre Steering Group/Joint Committee for the last five years.

Strengthen town centre

“The core has always been to strengthen the town centre with a retail and leisure offer which would appeal to the people in this part of Sussex. While the retail world has been changing over the last few years we remain convinced of the potential for Uckfield.

“It is encouraging that the Joint Committee is moving towards a partnership approach which should enable development proposals to be brought forward more certainly.

“I can confirm that over the years we have had discussions with most of the major retailers of which some were encouraging.”

Dream

Mr Borkowski’s comments follow publication of views from Uckfield News independent columnist Observer who wrote on Saturday that Uckfield could only dream of Next, M&S, Lidl, Aldi and the like.

“You will see from your records that we have been regular subscribers to Uckfield News for many years and have found it most informative.

“You may also recall that SJI has been working on town centre proposals since we were asked to consider options after the flooding in 2000. We have made a range of proposals over the years and engaged with the Town Centre Steering Group/Joint Committee for the last five years.

Core

“The core has always been to strengthen the town centre with a retail and leisure offer which would appeal to the people in this part of Sussex. While the retail world has been changing over the last few years we remain convinced of the potential for Uckfield.

“It is encouraging that the Joint Committee is moving towards a partnership approach which should enable development proposals to be brought forward more certainly. I can confirm that over the years we have had discussions with most of the major retailers of which some were encouraging.

“Together we need to create proposals which demonstrate the attractiveness of Uckfield to a wider audience. The concept of developing around a village green is exciting and can be made into something unique in the region. Uckfield has much to offer and we remain committed, even after 15 years.”
