Deadline approaches for registering to vote in council elections

The deadline for registering to vote in district and parish council elections on Thursday, May 5, is coming up next week.

The first UK-wide referendum in more than 30 years is also due to take place on May 5. Only people who have registered to vote will be able to have their say.

The question being put to voters is:

“At present, the UK uses the 'first past the post' system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. Should the 'alternative vote' system be used instead?”

Residents who are going to be away on May 5 can apply to vote by post or by proxy.

Wealden Council returning officer Charles Lane said: “Now is the time to make sure you are registered to vote before the deadline on Thursday, April 14.

“The deadlines if you need to apply for a postal or proxy vote are 5pm on April 14 for postal votes and 4pm on April 21 for proxy votes.”

To learn more call 01892 602417 or print the forms available on the About My Vote website, fill them in and return them to Wealden Council.
