Dates given for public exhibition on Uckfield High Street improvements

Dates have been given for a public exhibition showing revised plans for the latest stage of a scheme to transform Uckfield town centre.

The project board behind the Uckfield town centre highway improvement scheme has looked again at its proposals for the work in High Street following concerns raised by the public over the number of on-street parking spaces to be provided.

Details of the revised version of the scheme will be made public following meetings being held this month with Uckfield Chamber of Commerce and Uckfield Town Council, to brief them on the scheme and traffic management options around it.

The plans will then go on display at Uckfield Civic Centre on Friday, June 26 from 2pm to 8pm and Saturday, June 27, from 10am to 4pm when people will also be able to put their questions to members of the board.

The work, which will include pavement widening, new street furniture, ‘smart’ traffic lights and tree planting to help mitigate flooding will affect High Street between Bell Lane and Church Street and is the second of three stages of work.

The first stage, affecting the southern end of High Street, was completed in November last year, while the third phase will see improvements at Uckfield Bus Station.

The project board is comprised of members of the county council, town council and Wealden District Council.

A spokesman for the board said: “We have listened to the concerns people have expressed over the proposed number of parking spaces and taken this into account in the revised plans.

“We think these plans will address those concerns but it’s important before we share these with the wider public that we give the chamber and the town council the chance to comment.

“The exhibition later this month will give everyone the chance to see how the revised scheme will look and to talk to members of the board and put any questions or concerns to them directly.”

The scheme is being funded by around £3 million of developer contributions from new housing developments in the town.
