Town councillors have agreed in principle to take steps to prevent unauthorised car parking at the Foresters Hall, New Town.
Concerns have been raised about users of the hall being unable to park because of spaces being taken by residents living in the surrounding area.
It has also been suggested that London-bound rail commuters have also used the site.
The town council has placed “polite” notices on offending vehicles and is now looking at ways to prohibit non-hall users parking between 9am and 10pm.
Cllr Louise Eastwood said the council needed to protect spaces for users of potential users of the hall, who could take their custom elsewhere if difficulties continued.
Councillors were told by council officers: “Members may be aware that parking in the area can at times be difficult, especially for two and three car families.
“This has led to the car park being used by residents of Harcourt Road, Vernon Road and even Framfield Road”
Some vehicles are being left all day and overnight including work vehicles, Transits etc. Out of the 23 bays in the car park, at least ten are regularly being used by residents, the report said.
