How about 'Bellman'? An alternative name for a town crier, it has a certain local ring about it, perhaps because of Bell Lane connection in Uckfield.

Thank you for the suggestions. I like the idea of Markwick for a surname - will test it on Kevin via Twitter! Quite like Wilfred for his first name, then he could be Wilf to his best friends. What do you think about that?

Possible name for the crier - Mr. Markwick - similar to Pickwick, whom he is like, plus an old Uckfield family name (of whom Kevin M is part)
