The car was in the layby outside the Santander Bank and caught fire as the driver started the engine. She got her children out of the car and the family were looked after by Santander staff, writes fire service watch manager Ian Ritchie.

Uckfield firefighters wore breathing apparatus and extinguished the fire with a hosereel before it could spread from the engine compartment to the rest of the car.
