Brothers Edward and Harry Cockill celebrate success at Snetterton. This weekend they race at Donnington Park.

Brothers aim for the podium at Donnington Park on Sunday

Brothers Edward and Harry Cockill start testing tomorrow for a weekend of motor racing at Donnington Park.

It will be their second race outing in a Radical SR3, in the Radical Endurance Championship, following a great start to the season at Snetterton on March 28, when they took a first and a second place.

They will start with a penalty of 35 seconds, a handicap imposed because of their early success, and that means this weekend will be quite a challenge for them.

“Still we managed to win at Snetterton with a 20 second penalty,” said Edward, who added that it would be good to get on the podium.

Last year Edward won the British Fiesta championship while Harry had a sabattical after a similarly successful career.

The Radical is completely different to anything they have raced before. Previously their cars have been front wheel drive, this is rear wheel. It is more aerodynamic and has a lot more power.

It has roughly 370 brake horsepower but weighs only 600 kilos which gives it about 600 brake horsepower per tonne.

Round Silverstone the Radical is 25 seconds faster than the Fiesta. Edward said: “That is a humongous chunk quicker. It is fantastic. It is brilliant.”

The brothers who help run the family business Uckfield Motor Services on the Bellbrook Estate, Uckfield, came from a karting background and Edward said the Radical was like a big kart with loads of grip.

In the past they have set their own cars up for racing. This time they run with a team.

They will be testing at Donnington Park tomorrow, come back to work in Uckfield on Friday and then return to Donnington Park on Saturday ready to race on Sunday afternoon.

There will be two qualifying sessions of 50 minutes each on Sunday morning to fix grid positions for two races. Harry will do one and Edward the other.

Pit stops are a fixed 45 seconds and because of the brothers’ success first time round they will have an extra 35 seconds in the pits this time. They will change driver during the stops and because of the time penalty they will have to be considerably quicker than on their last outing to be competitive.

They are looking forward to the challenge.
