Updated on Friday, June 23: Planning permission has been given for offices above Josefina in Uckfield High Street, and a salon next door in Grange Road, to be turned into three flats.
From our original story on April 10, 2017: The plans before Wealden Council were submitted by Mr Tony Cox and a design and access statement says the change of use for 146A High Street is being sought because of “somewhat irregular use and lack of current interest” of the accommodation.
The statement says there has been development on the site since the early 1800s but the building in its current form dates to the late 1800s or early 1900s.
Although originally a residential building, it has been used predominantly as offices from the late 1900s onwards, and office-use is its current designation.
Lack of current interest in the space is said to be because while well-located in the town centre the site lacks parking provision commensurate with modern office use; the floor area is limited in its current internal environment and in its ability to accommodate user groups with mobility issues; and there is a lack of sufficient headroom for extensive use as office space.
The statement says: “Demand for small office space within Uckfield town centre is relatively low, given the high rental value and high levels of business rates.”
The plan is to create two self-contained one-bedroom flats and one two-bedroom flat within the three-storey building, all formed on the first and second floors, with minor changes to the external fabric.
*Monday night’s Uckfield Town Council plans committee voted not to support the application because of concerns over waste management, parking and the construction of a terrace.
