20mph speed limit for High Street and Church Street, Uckfield

A 20mph speed limit will run along Uckfield High Street and into Church Street when highway improvements have been completed by the end of next year.

Footways will be wider and paved with quality York stone, on-street parking will be restricted to disabled spaces and loading bays. There will be soft landscaping including trees, and new modern street furniture will be installed.

The work will be done in phases with the first beginning on September 22 between Framfield Road and Bell Lane. This is expected to take about eight weeks finishing at Christmas or in January.

The second phase will begin in spring 2015 between Bell Lane and Church Street and is expected to take about 30 weeks.

The third phase will follow on from that and involve improvements at Uckfield bus station where changes will be made to the layout with a bigger central island and new shelters containing live bus information.

Live information will also be provided at bus stops in the town centre.

An outline of the overall project was given at a meeting at Uckfield Civic Centre last night when full details were given of arrangements for the first phase which will include a one-way system affecting southbound traffic.

About 40 people at the meeting also heard about construction plans for the new Network Rail car park and how much it will cost to park there.
